2 - Intertextuality Research

Task 1 - Write a brief introduction describing what you're going to do in this task - something like this:

"In this Intertextuality research task I will be looking at how a range of media products in the category of 'Documentary' use intertextuality to appeal to a wide range of audiences.  I will also be highlighting what makes these references to other media texts effective"

--------------------------

Task 2 How and why is intertextuality employed in 2 media products and what effect does this have in their intended audience?

Make sure you follow the same type of product you have chosen for your NEA.

Remember that INTERTEXTUALITY can be used in a range of ways:

  • via images (photos, illustrations, type of art used)
  • via text (what is written, how it's written [type of font] and colours used - or a combination of all)
  • via dialogue or sound/music (what people say, music used, type of intonation used).

Recommended software:
Padlet, popplet, any other mindmap app… goconqr.

----------------------------------

Task 3 - Write a conclusion covering the following points:

  • How has this research helped you drive your idea forward?
  • What type of intertextuality would you use in your NEA?
  • What would make your intertextuality effective to your target audience?

1 - Genre research

Five steps in your Blogging Journey
  1. Follow the tasks below to create your new post.
  2. Start with "Task 1" and then only move on to Task 2 after you finish Task 1.
  3. You need to make sure you learn and understand the concepts you are looking into during these tasks in order to apply them properly to your main task.
  4. You need to ensure you finish a post by the end of the lesson.
  5. You need to publish your post at the end of the lesson.

--------------------------------

Task 1 - Write a short introduction explaining what you're going to do for this post... here's an example:

"In this post I am going to undertake research into the genre of my chosen brief.  The main reason for doing this is to highlight and analyse codes and conventions of a range of media texts in order to help me produce an effective media product of my own.

The genre of the text as described in my chosen brief is... and I'll be looking at the conventions of 3 media products that of the same genre".

--------------------------------

Task 2 – Genre research: How are genre conventions used in 3 media products? Choose 3 media texts similar to the ones you chose in for your NEA to help you identify and analyse relevant conventions of the chosen genre.

For example:

  • If you chose the TV Documentary brief - Look at 3 documentaries and identify key codes and conventions, e.g. the use of narration? Facts on the screen? interviews? You need to use screen grabs.

Explain what makes these conventions effective in "driving the story forward".

  • If you chose the Magazine brief - Look at 3 different magazines front covers and contents pages of the same genre (current affairs) and identify codes and conventions that makes them effective, e.g. type of photography? Layout? Typography? Language used? Colours (denotation/connotation)? Political affiliations and how these are evident in the front covers and contents pages? You need to use screen grabs.

  • If you chose music video to a protest song - Look at 3 music videos and highlight conventions that are typical of that genre of music, e.g. extensive use of close ups? Is there always a narrative? Use screen grabs.

Key words and concepts to be used in this analysis:
  • Mise-en-scene: props, settings, hair, make up, performance (body language), lighting (low/high key).
  • Camera work: type of shot, camera movement and angle.
  • Sound: diegetic, non-diegetic, sound effects, etc.
  • Editing: slow motion, fast pace, slow pace, transitions (cuts, dissolves).

Recommended software:
PowerPoint, Prezi, emaze.

---------------------------

Task 3 - Conclusion / Summary of research.

Write a short conclusion of your findings.
How did the research help you with your idea?
What elements of the existing texts you looked at would you consider adapting to your ideas?
How has your idea developed after conducting this research?

NEA Briefs

TASK 1 - Create a new post, copy and paste the Learning Objectives onto it... You need to title the new post "NEA BRIEFS".

Write an introduction to the task... something along the lines of: "In this post I'm going to choose my brief for the NEA and I'll be coming up with initial ideas for both the required products... I will be creating a mind map to record my ideas".

--------------------------------

TASK 2 Read through the briefs and select ONE... write a short paragraph explaining why you chose it.  Make sure you include the following information in your explanation as well:

- What skills do you already have that can help you produce your chosen media texts?
- What skills do you intend to develop whilst working on your media texts?

Be specific about the skills - don't just write "Photoshop skills" or "Video editing skills", make reference to specific skills from Photoshop or video editing that you either know or want to develop.

Make sure you choose your brief well, read ALL the information and requirements to make sure you fully understand what's required.

Further guidance:

  • You must not reproduce an existing media product or brand.
  • Group productions are not permitted but you can use your friends and others to act in, or appear in, the media production. In addition, unassessed learners and others may operate lighting, sound, recording and other equipment under your direction if required.
  • To make it simple... these briefs are individual.  You can use other people to help you but make sure you end up doing all the technical tasks (photography, filming, editing, etc).  You're NOT required to be in-front of the camera in your own production.

---------------------------------

TASK 3 - Create TWO mind maps of initial ideas for the main product and the website in your chosen brief.  You may use popplet, padlet, goconqr or other technology to record this.

Key information required in your mind map:

  • Potential name for the production (working title).
  • Potential names of people you might work with (remember it's NOT group work).
  • Potential target audience for the production.  The brief already gives you an idea but you need to be more specific.  You need to cover sexuality, gender, race and interests, demographics, psychographics.
  • Ideas for type of content - types of scenes, characters, artists, narrative, interviews, sound effects etc.
  • Ideas for type of images and shots, sound effects, etc.
  • Ideas for mise-en-scene for each of the images, video shots (colour scheme, locations, props, make up, hair, etc).
  • Ideas for types of representations and stereotypes you might include in your production.
The mind map below is an example to get you started... it's very basic and it doesn't contain all the info above... so just use it as a guide or to get your creativity flowing!

You could use Bubbl.us as another platform for creating mind maps.

-----------------------------------

Task 4 - Embed your mind maps in your blog post... if you're using popplet you will need to complete them and then save them as jpegs... popplet won't save your work so you better make sure you finish what you started.

--------------------------------

Task 5 - Write a conclusion that summarises all of your ideas for both products.
